"The vision for PLM has always been centralized management of all product knowledge and the enablement of collaboration throughout the product lifecycle. While there continues to be a need to get engineering data (e.g. requirements, specifications, and revisions) under control and share designs across the supply chain, manufacturers are realizing that PLM needs to be taken to the next level.
This level is where processes such as define, design, manufacture, promote, and support are interconnected. Manufacturers are also realizing metrics need to be established for everyone involved in developing and launching a product, including product management, supply, manufacturing, engineering, marketing, and sales. Perhaps most importantly, there need to be ways in which ideas and feedback from external partners such as customers, partners, and suppliers are incorporated into the NPDL process."
